I'm from Australia eh?
Ok since my last post a lot has happened so here's a quick summary: international orientation, classes, snow, snowboarding. Rather than write a gigantic post though here's what's happened since orientation in terms of meeting people from new and interesting places.
Orientation was excellent and I met a lot of the other exchange students just through that one night. Didn't learn too much that I didn't already know about the exchange process (which was the purpose of the night) but the social events that have followed have well made up for the fact that I missed the Canada v Russia World Junior Hockey Championship game to attend. After the orientation a few of us went to see a comedy event at the Student Union theatre and it was actually decent for the 2 bucks paid.
By my estimation the exchange group can be lumped into Australians (I'd estimate 30% of the students), Dutch and Belgian (maybe 10%), British and Irish (5%), Mexican 15% and others making up the rest. Everyone is quite friendly but I've found the first three groups to be great value for partying it up with the Dutch putting even some Aussies to shame. I've also met a few exchange students who are continuing on from last semester and they've been a blast. So far there are 4 Australians named Nick studying this semester. This has led to much confusion but we're working through it.
The language barrier isn't nearly as great as I assumed it would be. Far too often I've been so amazed at someone else's English and lack of a distinctive accent that I've asked if they're English, this is not a mistake to be made often.
The last week has been a pretty social occasion with the exchange students. Most people went out on Wednesday night to the best damn club queue I've ever been in (rather than have a huge queue for all the waiting students, the Pit Pub had a waiting room with DJ and alcohol). On Thursday night we went into town to a couple of clubs and had a blast. Friday night was the UBC ski and board club party which stopped serving alcohol much too soon. Saturday I was feeling pretty tired after snowboarding and thought I'd go straight home and sleep. My laptop decided I'd much rather receive tempting messages of party's at the Pit so once again I headed out. Tonight I'm resting I swear.
Throughout this whole ordeal has been a vast array of new names and faces, multiple explanations of the location and basic meteorological patterns of Brisbane, way too much beer and not nearly enough bourbon, some good music but too much bad gangsta rap and a lack of sleep that I'm all too accustomed to.
Nick - actually asked an Irish girl if she was Scottish and lived to tell the tale
"Your path is arduous but will be amply rewarding" so keep reading ...
